Iron Man 3 Second Weekend Predictions

Marvel films usually result in about a 50% drop off each week sometimes more. That was the case with both Iron Man 1 and Iron Man 2, but what does that mean for Iron Man 3? Well, a lot especially because both previous Iron Man films didn't have any competition the week after and dropped between 50-60%. The films that followed those two films were Robin Hood which grossed 36 million its opening weekend and Speed Racer which grossed 18 million. Iron Man 3 on the other hand has to go against The Great Gatsby which stars one of Hollywood's most bankable stars in Leonardo Dicaprio. Lets take a look at the first week gross of the last couple staring roles for Leo.

J Edgar    11 million     November Release

Inception  62 million    July Release

Shutter Island  41 million  February Release

Who Wins?

Though none of the previous films are at the level of Iron Man 3 you can't deny the bankability of Leonardo Dicaprio. It also helps that Gatsby is one of the most recognizable books in literature and Baz Lurhman's stylistic approach and take on modern music should draw large enough crowds. How will this affect Iron man 3? In my opinion it should do some damage. I am predicting that Gatsby grosses around 40-45 million in its opening weekend, which will take the female crowd completely out of the Iron Man 3 second viewing. Lets not forget the big twist has caused some backlash and may result in a lack of 2nd viewings. I don't think Gatsby will overthrow Iron Man in the top spot but I think it will be far closer than anyone expected.

Predictions

Iron Man 3- 55 million
The Great Gatsby- 50 million

I could be way off base and completely wrong but that is what predictions are. I am positive though Star Trek will obliterate week 3 which will leave Iron Man picking up scraps from then on, it will easily cross the billion dollar mark world wide in its 2nd week.
