Overall
Trey: 3.25/5
Though a fun movie Iron Man 3 suffers from many problems that occur in the previous marvel films. Comedy overshadows the dramatic and thrilling moments, while the story though simple fails to execute when the time is right. With some poor decision by the writing team, some stylistic and bad filming decisions by the director and an overall lack of heart. Iron Man 3 becomes a film that contradicts its predecessors and becomes more fun than it is intriguing. Its uneven and when it's all said and done the cons outweighs the pros. It's no Iron Man 1 but at least its better than Iron Man 2.
Suzanne: 3.5/5
Overall this movie wasn't the worst thing that I have seen this year, but it definitely wasn't the best. I thought that the comedy aspects of the movie were enjoyable but I am a girl who loves comedy. The action scenes were too quick moving and loud with far too man explosions and too many quick cuts. It was no where close to the first Iron Man, which is by far the best of the three. I will say it is better than Iron Man 2 but lets be honest, the second one was horrible.
Overview
Another year means another superhero film by Marvel Studios. This round goes to Marvels heaviest hitter Iron man with the 3rd film in the trilogy. This one starts Robert Downey Jr in the title role as a more tormented Tony Stark, one whose experience in New York (The Avengers) has affected him greatly. He is experiencing panic attacks and lack of sleep has resulted in Tony building more suits to keep himself calm. Soon enough another threat rises in the form of The Manderin (Ben Kingsley) and a rival scientist by the name of Aldirch Killian (Guy Pearce). With his girlfriend Pepper Potts (Gwenyth Paltrow) half worried half fed up with the damaged Tony Stark, a series of events leads to Tony's isolation from everything he knows and love. Can this hero overcome the things he fears most? Let's give our thoughts on Iron Man 3!
Visuals
Trey: Marvel films always have top notch visual effects and Iron Man 3 was no exception. The suits looked gorgeous the fight scenes were rather striking and the Imax presentation didn't help. However the 3d wasn't necessary it was distracting at times, for me at least. The sky rescue scene was especially fantastic but as great as it was it won't stay with me because nothing emotional or shocking followed.
Suzanne: I thought the visuals in this movie were pretty great when it came to the Iron Man suits. Other than that It wasn't all that impressive. I thought that the 3D was poorly done because the movie itself wasn't filmed for it therefore it was just kinda there. Also with it being in IMAX also not very impressive because once again it wasn't filmed for IMAX, it wasn't meant to be on a screen that big.
Audio and Score
Trey: The IMAX sound systems were a little to much with this film. There was far to many explosions and it left me with an extreme headache. That is not the films fault, so I won't be holding it against them. The sound fit the movie well and the score tho unoriginal heightened the action sequences of the film.
Suzanne: The IMAX was too loud! I had the biggest headache after seeing this explosion packed movie I would suggest some earplugs to deafen things a bit and save yourself the headache. I thought the songs that were chosen for the movie worked well and the sounds of everything in the movie were pretty great.
Acting
Trey: The most engaging performances for me was Ben Kingsley and Rebecca Hall as The Manderin and Maya Hanson. The problem is both of them are underused, it was extremely disappointing for me. Robert Downey Jr is clearly in his element but his stick is getting very old to me, he needs to evolve as an actor and this film didn't give him the opportunity. Both Paltrow and Guy Pearce did a good enough job now but it wasn't that great. Either way the acting was a non factor in the deduction of points.
Suzanne: The acting in this movie was probably the highlight of the entire film. Ben Kingsley was great as the Manderin and in his twist role as just the "face" of the Manderin so to speak. I thought that Ben Kingsley should should have been in the movie longer. I know a lot of people were mad about the twist in the movie but I thought it was hilarious. Like I said earlier in the movie I am a girl who loves comedy so this twist was pretty great for me. And it helped that Kingsley did such a great job in both of his "roles". Robert Downey Jr. was his usual cocky self and I loved it. His relationship with the kid in the movie was probably my favorite part because the kid just shrugged him off. Guy Pearce was great in his role as well but also not in it enough until the very end of the movie. Paltrow was good as well but her character didn't seem to have a big enough part, her getting kidnapped was just a small thing on the side that didn't seem to matter very much.
Story
Trey: Here is where the problems occur for me and it begins about 45 minutes into the film. The beginning had tremendous depth with the anxiety attacks that occurred when he is reminded of the events in New York. The problem is it was stopped as soon as the story needed to advance which is unacceptable. The biggest problem is the way in which every problem is instantly handled, and any interesting factor of the film is dropped. After that 45 minute to 1 hour mark a twist is revealed that The Manderin is really just an actor hired by Aldrich Killian. This ticked me off not because of its comic roots but because The Manderin was set out to be such a commanding villain. He carried me through the beginning of the film, and when he was discarded Killian couldn't live up to it. As for the Extremis villains they lacked motives much like their master Killain. What made all these amputees want to turn on the world? No reason was given or implied. Why did Aldrich want to attack the president or Tony? As for the president I have no clue as for Tony it was because he was stood up I believe. Which to me is a poor motive. The Extremis virus needed more development because the first half of the film only teased it, it needed time to flesh out what it actually does instead of adding more and more aspects to the unnecessary villain. It just never worked for me and I though the comedy was overpowering to attempts at a emotional connection. Also the Mark 42 was blaring inconsistent compared to its other counterparts, it was said to be not battle ready but when a battle came it was top notch. For comedies sake it failed to act when there was no immediate danger. Also how can everyone control the Iron Patriot suit? I am almost positive nobody can use any suit besides Tony, Pepper and Rhodes it is only coded to specific people. To top it all off I feel Black slapped Jon Favreau and the previous installments in the face when having Tony get surgery to remove the shrapnel. He spent the whole 2nd moving CREATING AN ELEMENT! just to keep the shrapnel from killing him, when he could have gotten surgery the whole time. I am done ranting.
Suzanne: The story was good for me until the very end of the movie. I am not as heated about it as Trey is and I'm sure you are getting tired of reading so I will keep it short. I thought the story did well until the end when they did surgery on Tony Stark. The entire plots to the first two movies was that Tony couldn't live without his arc reactor and there was no way to possibly get the shrapnel out. Then at the end they are like oh its cool we will just do surgery and get it out. Really...lets just forget the first two movies and do the opposite of what they were about. Now, for the rest of the story I really enjoyed it. I thought that it was fairly enjoyable and I liked the twist unlike most die hard Iron man fans, (sorry guys).
