With Iron Man flying back into theaters tomorrow with the 3rd film in it's series, we take time to remember the best film in the marvel cinematic universe (in my opinion). In 2008 the future of marvel films was hanging in the balance of one superhero movie, Iron Man. Jon Favreau busted out a surprise hit and one of my favorite superhero films of all time. Known for reinvented the career of Robert Downey Jr. and started the financial powerhouse known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
This film was one of the first films that I remember where the main character is a narcissist whose wise cracking jokes carried a film. It was refreshing to see a hero that is so villainous as a regular person. Like Batman he doesn't have powers to achieve his goals, he has a brain and his wit which is incredible to watch. Though this film is not perfect its one of the many films I can watch anytime of any day. Jeff Bridges makes a decent enough villain and Gwyneth Paltrow balances out the wit and egotistical RDJ with her subtle performance. It is just a fun time at the movies, and the themes and somewhat grounded nature of the film is unlike anything achieved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though the approach of marvel films have followed a simple template, Iron Man is the only film to me that doesn't feel like its pressed into that template. The reason for this is that Jon Favreau was given complete control off this property. Every other film that has followed has been strictly controlled by Marvel which has lead to problems. Both Favreau and RDJ have stated that was the problem with the underwhelming Iron Man 2. Though Marvel still has the opportunity and source material to surpass the first film in its collection, I will always have a soft spot for the one that set it off.
What do you guys think of Iron Man? Is there any Marvel films you feel are better? Let me know in the comments below!
